Focus Spring 2018
An enthusiastic group in Clare is working on a free music
event called ‘Rock and Stroll’. This would be the
culmination event of the Summer Festival on
Sunday 29th July
Rock and Stroll is based upon the concept of Porch Fest in the
USA that was started in New York in 2007 as a way of bringing
the community together. Bands play on the hour for 45
minutes in someone’s porch then the audience move on to the
next Venue. Plans are under way to modify this idea to suit
staging it in Clare.
So far they have received agreement in principal from the 8
venues they have asked to host a band, along with enthusiastic
encouragement from the local council, the CBA , Visit Clare,
…actually everyone they speak to about it! And who wouldn’t
think it a good idea: A free event by the Community for the
Community.
So this is how the schedule is shaping up, giving just a bit more
than an hour for the first venue to allow enough time for
everyone to get to the Country Park for Band no 2.
Venue 1.
12.45 Kick off at Clare Golf Course
Venue 2.
2pm
The Country Park Platform 1
Venue 3
3pm
The Playing Field
Venue 4.
4pm
Jazz at the Bell
Venue 5
5pm
The Swan
Venue 6
6pm
Folk at the Baptist Church
Venue 7
7pm
The Cock Inn
Venue 8
8pm
Culminating at the Globe.
In essence these are really 8 stand-alone events. Venues can
prepare for their audience in any way they see fit (other than
any form of entrance fee..it is to be a completely free event).
All that is asked is that once a band has played for its 45
minutes it stops for at least half an hour to encourage
movement to the next venue. If bands wish to carry on after
that time it is entirely up to them.
As in the USA a Facebook page will be set up to advertise the
event and give updates on the bands and schedule. A couple of
days beforehand the final schedule and map will be printed
and made available for collection from any of the venues.
The groups strap line will be ‘whatever the weather’ obviously
to indicate that this event will go ahead whatever.
Some of the venues may wish to arrange their own bands. The
name Rock and Stroll does not preclude any form of music.
If a band is playing for free, a donation ‘hat’ will be available.
There will be an opportunity to purchase t-shirts printed
nearer the time. These will be sold to create a little working
capital for printing and signage.
Movement of people will be along the public highways but
warnings about crossing the roads carefully will be displayed.
Additional parking facilities are being considered although the
idea is that ‘the audience’ will walk the route.
The group are keen for anyone with additional ideas to come
forward. A Facebook Page is being set up to provide additional
information. This is an inaugural event so everyone will learn
from how it goes.

Cafe Clare, Clare Pharmacy and the Golf Course have signed
up to #refill which is an initiative pinpointing premises on a
national map where free water bottle refills are available.
It is an App based search facility for phones and tablets. This is
in response to the recent news items concerning over use of
plastic bottles.
Suffolk Day
Suffolk Day is back this summer, shining a light on what makes
our county so special - but what do you love about Suffolk?
On Thursday, June 21, the longest day of the year, scores of
fun events will take place across the county in celebration of
the wonderful county we call home.
Backed by the East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star as
well as BBC Radio Suffolk, the day was a huge success last year
with hundreds enjoying the sunshine at Suffolk Day events.
The CBA (Clare Business Association) are looking into
contributing to Suffolk Day on Thursday 21st June. They are
working on ideas to involve businesses in the town and have
been in contact with the EADT who are the point of contact.
