WINES FOR CHRISTMAS

I love Christmas- a time for festivities, friends and family , tradition , and an opportunity to indulge in some fine wines. I have chosen wines that
I’ve known well for a number of years, they’re almost old friends, and are very traditional as befits the season. I imagine (and hope!) that I will
be renewing acquaintance with them all over celebrations.

2015 Muscadet Sevre et Maine “sur lie”, Chateau la Noe.

I seem to have tasted countless Muscadet wines,but over a period of more years than I like to remember, this is still my favourite. It has a depth
and complexity unusual in the region, and is not only ideal with fish dishes, but also as a party drink. Great value at £6.95 the bottle.

2015 Chablis, Domaine Vocoret.

I feel a great affinity for Monsieur Vocoret’s wines, as the first wine ever purchased by Nethergate Wines was the result of a rather long visit to his
cellars!That was over 35 years ago, but his wines are consistently of the highest quality, and are great representations of the traditional Chablis
style. It is perfect as an accompaniment to cold meats, as well as all fish dishes. Well worth £12.95 the bottle.

RED WINES

2011 Chateau la Rivalerie, premiere Cotes de Blaye.

Christmas cries out for a decent affordable Claret, and this certainly fits the bill! At six years old this wine has just about reached a decent
maturity, but will stay “ a pointe” for another seven to ten years.Cabernet sauvignon dominates, with great black fruit flavours. Ideal with all
meats, this is exceptional value , coming as it does from a rather unfashionable region of Bordeaux, at £7.95 the bottle.

2014/2016 Beaujolais

Some of you , as old as me, will remember a television comedy series called Clochemerle which was actually filmed in Regnié, when Monsieur
Passot was mayor, during which time Regnié was elevated to cru status-the highest level for Beaujolais. My reason for including a Beaujolais wine
is simply that I think they’re the perfect partner for roast turkey. The wine has a smooth refinement, which will certainly please, as should the

2011 Shiraz “Matilda”, Peter Dennis, Maclaren Vale.

At a recent Nethergate Wines tasting, I had the great pleasure of renewing my acquaintance with Peter Dennis, who is one of Australia’s premier
wine makers, and I was reminded of the excellent quality of his products. This full-bodied, but smooth, wine goes perfectly with all meat dishes,
and also goes rather well with cheeses. A very classy wine, at £10.95 the bottle.

Mistela Castell de Suirana

I think I must have recommended this wine at least once before over the years, but I make no apology for this, as it is, for me, the perfect sweet
wine to accompany the delicious sweet items that we over-indulge in, over Christmas. This wine, from Catalunya, is 16% alc., and was once aptly
described to me as liquid Christmas pudding! Needless to say ,I love it! £9.95 per 50cl bottle.
