This year has been another busy
year for the volunteers of
Clare in Bloom.

We are a small group of avid
gardeners who spend time
seasonally planting up the
containers you will see
throughout the town centre
as well as keeping the
Church borders tidy and
flower-filled.

his year we also split and replanted congested groups of
snowdrops in the Park spreading them along the walk

between the entrance to the Priory and the bridge on Ashen
Road. We also planted 3000 crocuses at the entrance to the
Granary as well as beneath the beech trees in Stoke Road and
Nethergate Street.

To attract more visitors to the town we decided to run a
weekend Open Gardens in Clare again – something which we
had not organised since 2013. This we did on the weekend of
Saturday 3

and Sunday 4

June. By our calculations we

welcomed 500+ visitors to our 10 open gardens. We ran a plant
stall, tea and cakes were available and on the second day we
also had musical interludes provided by music students from
Stour Valley Community School. The sun shone brilliantly
throughout the weekend. We want to thank all our garden
owners as well as our army of helpers and cake-makers who
joined together to make the day such a roaring success. We
were especially pleased at the number of visitors who came to
Clare from as far afield as Norfolk, Chelmsford and Ipswich as
well as local towns and villages.

We hope you have enjoyed the bright plantings of big red
begonias evident throughout our town centre containers this
summer. Next year we have plans to increase our bold
container plantings as well as plant narcissi bulbs for
naturalising in the Clare Castle Country Park.
Please join us on the first Wednesday of the month when we
meet at the Ancient House at 9am to keep the Church borders
looking neat and colourful.
Bring your gloves and trowel with you.
