The Composting Art

If you are a keen gardener or allotment holder then you will
be interested to know that the group, Garden Organic and
Suffolk County Council Recycling Services have come
together for the benefit of gardeners by proving training in
the art of composting.
I went with Lesley Cooper to a weekend training course at
Stowmarket, on the road to becoming a Master Composter;
apparently they are rare in the Sudbury area, but eventually
Cavendish will have two of us. There is a danger of it becoming
a mission with all kinds of different bins and techniques involving
worms, but because it comes under the heading of Recycling, it
has the blessing of the Council, with many resulting perks. It is
true that in all the years that I made compost for my gardens in
Pentlow, I was able to bring down the content of all the bins
drastically. In fact, except for tree prunings, I had no garden
waste to be taken away at all, and very little from the kitchen.
In a world that we are told is increasingly dominated by the
problems of waste, that can only be good.

The course was illuminating on two fronts, both of which are
common reasons in preventing people making compost: smell
and rats. If compost is properly prepared, there is no smell.
Material should be raw and plant based only, with a balance
between green waste – weeds, lawn clippings, kitchen vegetable
waste – and brown – paper, cardboard, twigs. Too many grass
clippings will smell and be slimy, so they need to be mixed with
other things which allow air to penetrate; properly mixed with
all sorts of green and brown matter, a compost heap will rot
down into beautiful loam full of nutrients without interference
from the gardener. It is after all a natural process. Never put
cooked food waste into the mix, as this will bring rats. They are
not interested in non-meat food, but the heat generated by any
good compost heap might be attractive to them. Here position
becomes important: rats live along the boundaries of human
habitation, so try to position the compost away from the limits
of the garden. They are also shy of us, so a thump on the bin as
you go past frightens them away.

It is a trouble-free and cheap way of obtaining soil-improver
while recycling a large amount of waste at the same time. The
Garden Organic group have a range of leaflets with advice on
composting, available from their website. It is good to take
advantage of a natural process: we can set it up, and it does the
rest by itself.
