So for the past 3 ½ years the choir, which now has a
membership of 95, has performed in Clare Town Hall, and
in May 2016 performed to another “full house” and
received many “raving “ reviews.

The choir now rehearses at The Clare United Reformed Church,
Nethergate Street, CO10 8NP, usually on the 1

Mondays of each month – 7.30 to 9.30 pm with a break during
summer holidays. The choral music is selected by Nigel
Partridge and is gradually and successfully introduced to the
choir. Choir members are unanimous in their enthusiasm  of the
music selected ranging from popular West End musicals to
more soft and semi-serious pieces.

An interesting aspect of a majority of choirs nationally, is the
small proportion of Tenor voices in a choir and Treble C is no
exception. So, should any reader be tempted to try it and see
together with other interested parties, you shall all be very
welcome.

A recent new recruit is quoted as saying:
“Since coming to the choir I have found that I have developed
self confidence and realise that perhaps I do have a singing
voice after all! This is due to the nature of the rehearsals with
Nigel’s leadership. They are structured so that, whatever your
past experience and knowledge, you are encouraged,
understood and you gain something from every rehearsal”.

Rehearsal dates are posted in many of the retail shops in Clare

CLARE COMMUNITY CHOIR

Treble C

Since the demise of the original Clare Choral Society  there
has been little opportunity for residents of Clare and its
surrounding area to be involved in choral singing.
Nigel Partridge, the Musical Director of Clare Community Choir
(Treble C) retired in 2009 as the Head of Music at Newport
Free Grammar School. He was at the school for 25 years and
had the privilege of leading many diverse groups ranging from
many types of choirs through to a Big Band.

On the day of Nigel’s retirement he received a letter asking if
he would be interested in becoming the Musical Director of the
Saffron Walden Town Band. Nigel attended an audition and so
started leading the band in the September 2009.

Notwithstanding his thorough enjoyment of working with the
band, which he continues to this day as it’s Musical Director, he
was missing choral music greatly, and so after careful thought
and discussing his ideas with other people in and around Clare,
Nigel decided to see if there was sufficient interest and support
for a choral group in Clare and its surrounding district.

The first meeting and rehearsal took place in March 2012, and
to Nigel’s surprise and delight, over thirty people turned up! A
small committee was then established, chaired by Roy Draper,
and a constitution was created. The committee met regularly to
develop necessary procedures and to agree with Nigel’s philos-
ophy that music should be open to all, whether they have previ-
ous experience and ability to read music or not. Everyone
should be able to participate and are welcomed on the same
footing. With this in mind the aim is to make rehearsals helpful
with a sense of personal achievement at the end, but most of
all, it is to be FUN! These are also times when members can
meet old friends and make new ones.
