Stoke Music has a special treat for everybody this autumn with a weekend
of music making, starting on Saturday 1st October at 7.30 pm with a concert
featuring two pianos and two pianists. The next day, Sunday, there will be
a masterclass for budding pianists of all ages and abilities given by the
accomplished pianist and child prodigy Peter Wild.

Peter Wild has had an extraordinary career which grew from his studies at Chetham’s
School of Music in Manchester and subsequently took him as teacher and pianist, all
over the globe as well as at home playing for BBC Radio, Granada Television and at the
South Bank in London. He was appointed teacher at the junior department of the
Royal Academy of Music and is at present the associate chief examiner at the Trinity
College, London. His work as an accompanist played an important part in his early
career and, for a number of years Peter was involved with many aspects of choral
music. Peter has been pivotal in the success of Trinity’s 2015 piano syllabus, the
reception of which has been so positive that it is testament to his expertise, diligence
and creativity.

Paulo Lopes was born in Lisbon, Portugal, where he started playing the piano at the
age of 6. At the age of 9 he was awarded a scholarship to the Gulbenkian Foundation
in Lisbon to study music and the arts. He joined the Conservatoire Nacional de Lisboa
at the age of 12 where he had piano tuition from Leonor Leitão-Cadete for several
years. He then came to London to continue his studies in music and the arts. He has
studied at the Guildhall School of Music and with the Spanish pianist Maria Garzón.
He has given various piano recitals throughout the country including the University of
Essex and two charity concerts at Hengrave Hall in aid of Amnesty International. Paulo
has also played in the south of France summer concerts and in Holland. He has given
recitals with the soprano Yvonne Howard, the bass Stephen Richardson, as well as
recitals with flutist Peter O’Connor. Paulo has won various competitions in regional
music festivals; he was awarded the prize for Excellence at the Sudbury Music Festival
in 1997 and admitted as licentiate at Trinity College, London the same year.
He also teaches the piano privately.

Unlike the musical compositions writ-
ten for one piano-4-hands and its ten-
dency to appeal to amateur or
semi-amateur pianists, the two-piano
repertoire was usually created for pro-
fessional musicians or for special
events and brings with it a whole new
dynamic and orchestral persona which
is much less in evidence with any other
instrumental duo.

The history of two-piano works, spanning
four hundred years, saw the most signifi-
cant innovations being made in the 19th
and early 20th centuries. Although the
inspirations for these works were rooted
in the social practices of the time, many
expanded not only the compositional
techniques of the period but also extend-
ed the other known chamber forms.

Igor Stravinsky was inspired by the excite-
ment and power of the sound of two
pianos, setting several original composi-
tions for the instruments including a con-
certo for two pianos as well as other
arrangements from his most popular
works. Equally, Bela Bartok’s Sonata for
two pianos and percussion holds a special
place in the development of musical gen-
re and modern tonality.

Perhaps one of the most prolific and orig-
inal composers for this medium was
Camille Saint-Saëns. As well as writing
several original works for two pianos, Le
Carnaval des Animaux (The Carnival of
the Animals) being a good example, he
also took it upon himself to create com-
plete transcriptions of his orchestral piec-
es for the instruments.
