The Suffolk Wool Towns are some of the best-preserved
historic towns and prettiest villages in Suffolk. Exploring them
feels like stepping back in time to the 15th century, when the
wool trade was at its peak, and the Suffolk Wool Towns were
among the richest places in the country.
During the medieval period, towns like Clare and Lavenham
grew extraordinarily wealthy from the production and trade
of woollen cloth. Across Suffolk this wealth was used to build
timber-framed houses, and ever-grander churches: buildings
that today are the hallmarks of a classic Suffolk Wool Town.

In recognition of the importance of the wool towns in the
development of the region a new rural funding project has
been launched. This project is called the LEADER programme.

What are the priorities ?

in the Wool Towns LEADER area

Maintain and improve the range and quality of
services and ensure access to them

* 

Promote sustainable management of natural
resources, integrating environmental, economic
and social needs.

Who decides on funding applications?
Details of how this rural funding programme is helping to
support development in wool towns across Suffolk and North
Essex has now been finalised and a leaflet published. The Wool

Funding is decided by a Local Action Group (LAG) made up of
people from the public, private and voluntary sector who live
and work in the area. LAG members bring their knowledge of
the area and expertise in relevant sectors to the group (on a
voluntary basis) to help ensure that the funding given meets
the goals of the Local Development Strategy.

What are the Wool Town Objectives ?

The Wool Towns local Action Group is particularly keen to
support the following :

Developing a coherent and distinct tourism branding

 

for the area

* 

Agricultural and other rural businesses to develop

 

and diversify their business

* 

Maintaining and attracting local services that
provides employment for young people

* 

Existing community facilities to provide more
services that promote public access to the
countryside

* 

Improving and enhancing woodland management

 

and its supply chain

* 

Innovative methods to conserve natural resources

Funding and Grant Information :

Grants are available to businesses and groups in villages such
as Clare, Long Melford, Lavenham and Finchingfield in north
Essex, which have historic links to the wool trade.

Suffolk County Council originally asked for £2.2m from the
central LEADER programme for its ‘Suffolk wool towns’ project.
Andy Cuthbertson, the programme’s manager for the county
council, confirmed £1.75million had been secured for the wool
towns and a further £1.85million for Suffolk’s heritage coast

Individual businesses, town or parish councils and
organisations can submit ideas for grants of up to £100,000.
Successful projects are funded on a 50/50 split, with the
applicant providing their share in either cash or resources.

A wide range of projects are eligible for funding including
projects that support cultural and heritage activities such as
festivals and events and those that increase forestry
productivity. Mr Cuthbertson said the money was open to
people in south Suffolk and north Essex, including the Babergh
and Braintree district council areas, and parts of Colchester
Borough, St Edmundsbury, Mid Suffolk and Tendring.

Mr Cuthberston said villages like Lavenham, which were
“forward thinking in terms of tourism” were already looking at
ways to pick up on the funding opportunity. He urged others to
follow suit and get in touch for guidance on the kind of
schemes that were likely to succeed. He added: “We will be
employing a facilitator who can talk through ideas and help
bring forward good projects. “So far we have had applications
from farmers who want to diversify or invest in innovative new
equipment and we have had interest from community pubs
and applications for holiday accommodation. The main
message is that we are open for business and people should
contact us with their ideas.”
