Charlotte’s career in the public eye began as a model and her first
appearance was in a Cadbury advertisement. She was then noticed
by a casting agent while walking down a street in London. Her first
screen appearance was as a water skier in Richard Lester’s film “The
Knack … and How to get It”. However, her real breakthrough came
when she appeared in the role of Meredith in the film “Georgy Girl”
as the roommate of the title character, played by Lynn Redgrave, in
1966.
Many memorable performances followed, with numerous awards
and honours for her acting prowess. She is currently one of the
nominees for an Oscar for her performance in the film “45 Years”.
She has already won a number of “Best Actress” awards for 45 Years,
including one from the Edinburgh Film Festival and the “Silver Bear
Award” for Best Actress from the Berlinale Film Festival.
Charlotte has been married twice. Firstly to a New Zealander, Bryan
Southcombe, who was at one time her publicity agent. They had a
son together, Barnaby, who is now a director, working mainly for
television. However, Barnaby was able to persuade his mother to star
in “I, Anna”, a film he directed, about a detective investigating a
murder, who falls for Anna, who is recently divorced and had met the
murder victim via a speed dating night.
Charlotte’s second husband was Jean-Michel Jarré, the French
electronic music composer. Together they had a son, David Jarré who
was a magician for ten years, but now performs as a singer in a duet
called the Two with Ara Starck, who was a painter. The couple live in
New York. Starck is the daughter of modernist designer Philippe
Starck who has crafted chairs with stiletto heels and orange juicers
that seem to defy gravity.
Charlotte Rampling suffered from depression when she was married
to Jarré, which descended into a breakdown in 1988. It was the mid
1990s before she recovered. As well as the many awards for her
acting from Film Festivals, etc, Charlotte was awarded the OBE in
2000 for her services to acting and United Kingdom-French cultural
relations.
The Haverhill business of D. Gurteen and Sons was established
on 28
th
September 1784 when Daniel Gurteen (1750 -1813), a
master weaver of Huguenot descent, paid £1000.00 into the
bank.
He specialised in weaving a fabric called “Drabbett”, which was
used for making the smocks worn by agricultural workers.
When the industrial revolution arrived in 1880 Daniel Gurteen III invested
in mechanisation by installing a magnificent steam engine that remains
in the factory and in pristine condition to this day.
The business expanded into the manufacture of men’s clothing and silk
smocks and by 1900 the company employed around 2,500 people in the
area. During the Second World War the Gurteen factory was fully
occupied making uniforms and clothing, supplying some 1500 stockists
around the UK. Today, although manufacturing in the town has ceased,
it is still run by the sixth and seventh generation of the family.
