The Pope, The Super Model and The Gunpowder Plot

A Suffolk Connection

A

mbrose Rookwood, born about
1578, was the eldest son of Rob-

ert Rookwood of Stanningfield, Suf-
folk. The family occupied the
impressive Manor of Stanningfield
(Coldham Manor) which had been in
the family since the time of Edward I.

The family were rich and powerful and
members of the family had frequently
represented Suffolk in parliament.

The family were staunchly Roman Catho-
lic, and many of its members, including
Ambrose's parents, suffered fines and im-
prisonment for their faith. Several be-
came priests and nuns. Ambrose's cousin
Edward, who possessed Euston Hall, Nor-
folk, is quoted as a typical victim of the
persecution of the Roman Catholics un-
der Elizabeth. He entertained Elizabeth at
Euston in 1578, but was imprisoned at Ely
from 1588 to his death in 1598, being
buried at Bury St. Edmunds ‘from the jail.’

The family’s devotion to the Pope was to
lead Ambrose into explosive trouble
when he became involved with Guy
Fawkes and his fellow conspirators in the
infamous Gunpowder Plot.

Ambrose was one of the Gunpowder Plot
conspirators of 1605, who opposed the
Protestant James I and sought to blow up
the Houses of Parliament. The plan was to
destroy Parliament, taking King James
with it, and replace him with the young
Princess Elizabeth who was a Catholic.

The plot was led by Robert Catesby and
Ambrose was one of the chief financiers.
Records show that “Rookwood not only
supplied much of the money for powder
and weapons, but he also had a fine stable
and horses to provide transport and
communications,” The Dutch gunpowder
expert Guy Fawkes was chosen to organise
the explosion.
Sadly for the conspirators the plot was
discovered and Rookwood and his friends
had to flee from London. All the
conspirators were eventually captured
and

hanged 

at

Westminster Yard, alongside Fawkes and
two other conspirators.
At the scaffold, the Suffolk man made a
speech that brought many in the crowd to
tears. He confessed to his crime but
prayed to God to bless the king and turn
him into a Catholic.

ince 2002 Coldham Hall has been the
home of Supermodel Claudia Schiffer

and her film maker Husband Matthew
Vaughn. The couple are reputed to have
paid £7.5 million for the mansion.

Claudia is one of the most sought after
models and has often been described as
the most beautiful woman in the world.
Her long slinky look has been seen on the
front cover of many of the top glamour
magazines in the World.

Her husband Matthew is the adopted son
of Robert Vaughn of ‘Men from Uncle
fame’ Matthew is well known for his films
which include ‘Lock Stock and Two Smok-
ing Barrels’, ‘Layer Cake’ and more re-
cently ‘Kingsmen’. When the couple
married at the hall their guest list includ-
ed Elton John, Madonna, Boris Becker
and Vinnie Jones. Sadly in 2014 the peace
and tranquility of this famous couple was
broken when a fire broke out at the Hall.
The blaze gutted several outbuildings and
former stables at the Hall. Around 50
firefighters spent more than two hours
battling the fire. Fortunately the fire
crews managed to stop the flames
spreading to the main building.

It has to be said that there is a certain
spooky irony in the fact that the house of
the man who wanted to burn The Houses
of Parliament to the ground should have
been nearly destroyed by fire. It is also an
interesting fact that one of Matthew’s
films is entitled ‘Lock Stock and Two
Smoking Barrels’.
We wonder if the spooky nature of the
co-incidence has occurred to Claudia and
her family.
