In 1973 railway enthusiasts Dick and Jane Hymas
founded the Colne Valley Railway. Their intention
was to create a dedicated site that could be used to
display and operate historical railway locomotives
and rolling stock.
Over the years the couple have built on this original idea to
create an extensive railway museum backed by the Colne Valley
Preservation Society (CVR). Now it appears all that will have to
close as the land owner, Australian business man Christopher
Young, does not wish to renew their lease when it runs out at the
end of the year. Mr Young said that the railway no longer fitted
into his plans for the land.
Subsequently, an application put in as part of Braintree District
Council Call for Sites revealed that Mr Young was hoping to build
up to 400 houses on the land.
The railway, in Castle Hedingham, drew up a short list of sites it
could potentially move to, and was poised to announce that it
will be moving to the other side of the river. However, this idea
has now had to be scraped for reasons which have not been
released. CVR chairman Paul Lemon said: “The railway remains
committed to finding a suitable home and would like to thank all
the landowners for their help and patience whilst we work
through all the ideas in an attempt to determine the one that
best meets the railway’s needs for the future.”
The society has been contracted by the landlord to handle dis-
posal of railway assets owned by him. This will be undertaken by
a series of competitive tenders over the coming year, although
most items will not be available for release until early 2016.
