Clare Ancient House Museum.

Clare Ancient House is a Grade I Listed
Building, and is recognised as having na-
tional importance. The West wing, on the
High Street, is believed to date from the
14th century, and the more heavily deco-
rated East wing may have been built in
1473, the date which appears in the plas-
terwork of the house. It is first mentioned
in a will of 1502, which refers to the new
and the old parts.

The House was given to the town of Clare
in 1938 by Charles Byford, to be put to a
useful public purpose. In 1979, a museum
was established. Subsequently, with the
help of grants from the Heritage Lottery
Fund and from St Edmundsbury District
Council, it was entirely re-designed, and
re-opened in 1999. The Museum is run by
volunteers and its trustees.

What can you see inside…

Exhibitions in the Museum tell the history
of the town, of the Lords and Ladies who
once lived in Clare, and of the ordinary
people who lived and worked here. In
2007 our exhibit featured theClare Reli-
quary Cross, a famous medieval artifact
which was found in the grounds of Clare
Castle, and now belongs to the Royal Col-
lection; it is housed in the British Muse-
um. In 2008-09 we focused on the history
ofClare Common with its remains of an
Iron Age fort and the medieval farm of
Erbury Manor.

For the 2015 season, come to learn about
theHistory of Education in Clare, pre-
pared by retired Middle School Head
Teacher Tom Shaw. For the Magna Carta
in Clare Festival, the Museum will also
provide information on thetwo de Clare
earls who were part of the Committee of
25, enforcers of Magna Carta in the 13th
century.

2015 Museum hours

The Museum opens for the 2015 season
on 2 April 2015.
New exhibitions will be on The History of
Education in Clare, and on the two de
Clare barons of Magna Carta, Richard de
Clare Earl of Hertford and his son Gilbert
de Clare Earl of Hertford and of Glouces-
ter. These form part of part of the Magna
Carta in Clare Festival.

The Museum is open Thursdays, Fridays,
Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays,
2pm until 5pm. Saturdays and Bank Holi-
days we open at 11.30.
